Every traffic controller holds the state ticket for the job (see below) and a valid White Card, which certifies that they have completed general construction induction training. We check every card against the state the job is in before the shift.

Traffic control tickets are issued state by state, built on national units of competency. These are the levels you will see on a traffic guidance scheme:
1. Traffic controller (QLD TC, NSW TCR, WA TC)
Role: directs traffic with a Stop/Slow bat to keep people and vehicles safe through or around the work zone. Built on the national unit RIIWHS205E.
2. Implement traffic management plans (QLD TMI, NSW IMP, WA BWTM)
Role: sets up, monitors and removes signs and devices — cones, barriers, signs — exactly as the traffic guidance scheme shows. Built on RIIWHS302E.
3. Traffic management design (NSW PWZ; national framework: Traffic Management Designer)
Role: designs and modifies traffic guidance schemes. The plan is then approved by the road authority or road manager, not by the designer.
Training is delivered by a registered training organisation approved in each state. Queensland (TMR) and Western Australia (Main Roads WA) then issue their own accreditation, valid for 3 years.
Traffic control tickets do not automatically travel between states. Queensland only accepts TMR accreditation, Western Australia requires Main Roads WA accreditation, and NSW recognises most interstate cards (not Queensland's) once SafeWork NSW is notified. In Victoria, traffic management on roads that require it must be carried out by an accredited traffic management company — there, our traffic controllers work under your accredited traffic management provider.
